This might nor work for Ubuntu 7.04 or later
First install this Install libxml via synaptic 
1 .Download
Download Ip1000 pixma driver here
2.Unzip
Unzip files in disired location
4. Install
$ sudo dpkg -i <.deb packages>
example: /home/joey/GyacHE.deb
5.Edit .ppd file
To allow printing quality options to be accessed through cups’ printer properties you must edit as root the printer’s ppd file.(This applies only to the ip1000.
$ sudo gedit /usr/share/cups/model/canonpixmaip1000.ppd
Add these lines:
*OpenUI *CNQuality/Quality: PickOne
*DefaultCNQuality: 3
*CNQuality 2/High: “2″
*CNQuality 3/Normal: “3″
*CNQuality 4/Standard: “4″
*CNQuality 5/Economy: “5″
*CloseUI: *CNQuality
You can also replace these lines:
*OpenUI *Resolution/Output Resolution: PickOne
*DefaultResolution: 600
*Resolution 600/600 dpi: “<>setpagedevice”
*CloseUI: *Resolution
with:
*OpenUI *Resolution/Output Resolution: PickOne
*DefaultResolution: 600
*Resolution 600/600 dpi: “<>setpagedevice”
*Resolution 1200/1200 dpi: “<>setpagedevice”
*Resolution 2400/2400 dpi: “<>setpagedevice”
*CloseUI: *Resolution
Save the file
6. Fix libs
$sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0 /usr/lib/libpng.so.2
$sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libtiff.so.4 /usr/lib/libtiff.so.3
$sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2 /usr/lib/libxml.so.1
(i don’t know why i do this but otherwise the printer does not work)
7. Restart Cups
$ sudo killall cupsd
$ sudo cupsd
8. Setup Printer
-System>Administration>Printing>New Printer
-Choose Local or network printer and specify port or url, respectively
-Forward
Manufacturer>canon
Model> PIXMA IP1000 (depends on your printer)
Driver>Standard
-Apply
(if you can’t find your printer choose:install driver>choose the ppd file you edited, reboot and try again to setup printer)
9. Test
Right Click on printer> properties>print test page
10. Setup on GIMP
-open an image to print
-file>print>Choose your printer name>setup printer:
Printer Model>PostScript level 2
command>lpr -P (PIXMA IP1000)
PPD File>browse at /usr/share/cups/model/ (mine is /usr/share/cups/model/canonpixmaip1000.ppd)
-OK
-Save Settings
-Print
How do I save the canonpixmaip1000.ppd file after I’ve edited it?
I’m told I don’t have permission – what do I do to change the permission status? I’m a newbie with Ubuntu and Linux. I used gedit for adding the extra lines and I used ’save as’ to keep the edited file

Used sudo to enter ppd file and got permission – one problem solved
@ John Newton Put Sudo after the command
or use this command
sudo -i
gedit /usr/share/cups/model/canonpixmaip1000.ppd
Ive been tiring to put the driver in but wont go still cant see it and when i try to enter the driver in the setup menu it comes up: Missing PPD-Adobe4.x header at 1:’/usr/share/cups/model/cannonixmaip1000.pppd

I don’t know where will you get the software because its the software is specially design for windows…..I don’t know how will you get the software

i have followed all procedures given in this site but while adding the printer in the model section i was not able to find pixma ip1000 but i have managed to find ip4000 in it which i have chosen thinking that it would be nearer my printer but on trying the test page it failed to print but on the screen it displayed that it was printing the test page.finally i have installed every thing to find my printer not working in ubuntu 6.10.please help me….

ip4000 won’t work with ip1000
Hi, I was able to install the printer but once I try to print a test-page, the little green lite blinks once and doesn’t print. I checked the status and the document gets paused, I tried to restart it but doesn’t work. Any ideas of what is going on here?

I have a problem,when i install my printer from ORIGINAL CD everything goes great until i reach printer connection then it says recheck the connecttion,so i did it but still it won’t change i tried custom install but i dont know wich port to select because after installing with custom install i get an error dat the driver cant find th eprinter so what should i do??buy a new cable or what???i never had this problem before and i installed my printer lots of times..PLS HELP

I downloaded the driver and now the printer does not print images….is there something else I have to download or use so it can print? I am using vista and I don’t see any options to print images…or when I print I don’t get the option to manage how I want to print…ex: wallet size, halfpage ect..If you have any info it will be greatly apprechiated.

Hi for some reason my printer will not print, the paper goes through it, and it does all the proper sounds as if it is printing but the paper comes out blank, I was trying to print in color as the blank ink is running, low if that makes any difference, can any one tell me what could be wrong please?
Does’nt work with 8.4 .. I don’t know how to run around it.. conflict with version libglib 1.2…. ubuntu 8.4 uses libglin 2.0
